What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is a leading treatment for trauma developed by Francine Shapiro.  It is a form a psychotherapy that involves working with distressing thoughts, images and beliefs related to traumatic events, but includes less in-depth descriptions of traumatic events and homework in between sessions than other forms of therapy.  It relies on the natural ability of the brain to heal itself by allowing the brain to complete communication about traumatic events with the accompaniment of eye movements, sounds or vibrations.
